Junior ‘Diddy’ League 2019
The 2019 edition of the Junior League is fast approaching with GAW’s young athletes working hard to develop the skills and technique required to swim fast. We are regularly asked questions about the format of the Junior League and many other Junior League related things.

Junior League Skills Sessions 2019
New for this season are monthly Junior League skills sessions which are open to all swimmers born in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 who are in Performance Group 1, Potential, Competitive Development and selected Academy swimmers.
This session will help to develop specific Junior League skills e.g. dive starts, turns, finishes, takeovers, breathing patterns.
They will take place on the first Thursday of every month from 19:30 – 20:30 at Gateshead Leisure Centre. If you have any questions please speak to your squad coach.
Friday 21st December 2018 – Christmas Development Meet
A massive well done to everyone in our first development meet of the 2018/19 season. Before jumping into the night’s events I’d like to thank everyone who helped us run the meet. Without them we simply couldn’t run these. We have 10 volunteers undertaking a Judges level 1 qualification in January which will mean we can be self sufficient in running development meets in the future and also make them official with regards to rankings. This means times can be used to qualify for county championships and local meets. They would be uploaded to https://www.swimmingresults.org/biogs/
It was great to see swimmers from across 4 groups in the club competing. Swimmers aged 9 to 11 were joined by Academy swimmers and all raced 25m or 50m in all four strokes. It was a fantastic night of racing with many unofficial PBs but more importantly a massive improvement in skill level from the start of the season.
For some of our youngest swimmers it was their first taste of competitive swimming and they all performed brilliantly. For our more experienced competitors it was a chance to race against one another and practice 50m race plans.

The night ended in a skins event where different coloured balls represented the stroke which each age group were to swim. After a tense competition with some close calls for who remained in the running, the winners were Maximus Murray (10 and over age group) and Jayden Skeoch (9 and over age group).
Moving into the new year, we have two more development meets planned for the 2018/19 season which we are hoping will both be level 4 meets. The original dates have been amended slightly and these will now be held on Friday 5th April and Friday 5th July. More information will follow closer to the time.
In addition, the Junior League is fast approaching and our Junior League sessions will begin on Thursday 3rd January. Selected swimmers from Academy will receive a message about this in due course. I’m extremely enthused about these, particularly after seeing the skills on display on Friday night. Here’s to a fantastic 2019 for Gateshead and Whickham Swimming Club.
